Exponents and Scientific Notation

I am going to teach you how to do exponents. In my example I will teach you how to do 6 to the 3rd power. Normally the exponent would be a small number in the top right hand corner of the base number, but with the computer we can't do that. The six is the base number and the three is the exponent. The exponent tells you how many times to multiply the base number by itself. To solve 6 to the 3rd power I would set it up like 6*6*6 which equals 216.

An example of scientific notation is the population of the US in July 2007 is about 301,000,000. In scientific notation it would be written like 3.01*10 to the 8th power. I wrote it like that because I do not want to waste time and space writing the whole number out. The way you can figure out if I'm right is move the decimal to the right as many times as the exponent number said. So 3.01*10 to the 8th power is the same as 301,000,000.
